How I got here
Electrical engineering trained me to care about measurement and repeatability. I worked in semiconductor manufacturing as an equipment engineer, using statistical process control to predict tool failure on the machines that make chips. That mindset shows up here too: the number on the screen should mean what it says it means.
Why this site exists
I built an early version of this typing test years ago, mostly out of frustration. The tests I was trying buried the actual test under popups, autoplay videos, "create an account to save your results," and ads that shifted the page right as the timer started. The test itself felt like the secondary product — bait for the rest.
So I built the one I wanted to use: it starts immediately, stays still while you're typing, and doesn't ask you for anything before you see your score. It runs well on Chromebooks and other low-powered machines, which is a constraint I test against rather than assume.
I do run ads here — they pay for the hosting and the domain. The rules are the ones I wanted from the tests that annoyed me: none at all on the typing test, never more than one on any other page, and every ad slot has its space reserved before the ad arrives, so nothing shifts under you.
That early version sat dormant for years. I came back to it in 2026 and rebuilt it from scratch.
Accessibility
The Aa button in the header switches the whole site to OpenDyslexic, a typeface whose weighted letterforms are designed to be harder to transpose. Whether it helps is individual — controlled studies have not found a consistent reading-speed benefit — so it is offered as a preference, not a fix. It changes nothing about your score: WPM is measured from your keystrokes, not from how the text is drawn. Your choice is remembered on this device.
